Tevere Farfa Nature Reserve ( Riserva Naturale Tevere Farfa)
how to get there:  
  • Leave the Roma - Firenze motorway at the exit  "Fiano Romano".
  • Take the road towards Fiano Romano and then Nazzano. 
  • You can reach the nature reserve from the car park at km. 31 of the Tiberina road, or from the visitor centre underneath Nazzano.

    Grey heron The Tevere Farfa nature reserve was founded in 1977, after the creation of a hydroelectric dam on the river Tiber. The reserve covers about 700 hectares around the convergence of the River Farfa and the River Tiber, characterized by slow flowing water and ponds. Today the reserve is one of the most important wetlands in Lazio. Within the park there are raised walkways allowing visitors to cross the marshy areas and several observation hides.

     
    Within the reserve there is an anthropological museum and a didactic park which offers guided tours.

     
    some typical river and wetland plants: White Willow Salix alba, Pussy Willow Salix caprea, Purple Willow Salix purpurea, Black Poplar Populus nigra ,White Poplar Populus alba, Elderflower Sambucus nigra, Horsetails Equisetum spp., Sharp Pointed Rush Juncus acutus, Common Reed Phragmites communis, Butterbur Petasites hybridus, Broomrape Orobanche spp., Maidenhair Fern Adiantum capillus-veneris, Ferns Polypodiaceae spp., Brooklime Veronica beccabunga, Common Duckweed Lemna minor, Hemp Agrimony Eupatorium cannabinum, Water Starwort Callitriche spp., Fool's Watercress Apium nodiflorum some typical river and wetland animals: Trout, salmone trutta, Leuciscus soufia, Freshwater shrimp Austropotamobius pallipes, Italian frog Rana italica, Green frog Rana esculenta, Grass snake Natrix Natrix, Moorhen Gallinula chloropus, Dipper Cinclus cinclus, Kingfisher Alcedo atthis, Grey heron Ardea cineria, Motacilla cineria
