representative group of Association of Ukrainians in Poland has
been founded in 1972. Jaroslaw Polanski was its co-founder and first conductor.
Zhurawli it is very unusual group. The members of chorus are singers living in several towns in different parts of Poland: from Przemysl and Kraków through Wroclaw, Legnica, Szczecin, Bialy Bór, Koszalin, Gdansk and Górowo Ilawieckie to Warszawa. The distance between towns determines form of chorus work, and is shown in Choir name. The group is reviving case of several months when singers are preparing to rehearsals and concerts. As wandering flock of wild cranes members of choir come flying from everywhere to the place of performance to learn beautiful Ukrainian songs and bring music to waiting for it audience. The astonishing level of choir performance is even more surprising when we realise what is the style of working.
In 1983 art of manager of group became Roman Rewakowicz graduate from Akademia Muzyczna im. Fryderyka Chopina in Warszawa.
Since the festival Legnica Cantat93 chorus conductor was Roman Radziwonowicz graduate from Akademia Muzyczna in Poznan. During this time special stress was laid on Ukrainian classical chorus songs not forgetting about folk songs, which are source of Ukrainian musical culture. That is main Zhurawli's aim to explore Ukrainian musical culture and to create its colourful image. Repertoire of their concerts is enormously varied. It consists of typical for Ukrainian music landscape Cossack dumas, full of pathos historical songs, humorous or lyrical folk songs, as well as examples of Orthodox Church music with unprecendented depth.
Choir is performing pieces with lyrics of Ukrainian national bard Taras Szewczenko with great reverence all the more because Szewczenkos poetry was entered upon by such outstanding artists of Ukrainian music as M.Lysenko or K.Stecenko. In the agenda of concerts we can find names of well-known Ukrainian composers: Dymitr Bortnianskij, Artemij Wedel, Kyrylo Stecenko, Mykola Leontowycz, Filaret Kolesa, Bohdan Latoszynskij and many more. Chorus has in repertoire popular Ukrainian Christmas carrots and szczedriwky for a few years. They were recorded on first choir CD in 1996. Jaroslaw Lewkiw, graduate from Akademia Muzyczna in Kyjiw, became art manager and conductor in 1999. Male choir Zhurawli was awarded a prize during festivals Miedzyzdroje77, Hajnówka84, Legnica Cantat93, Preveza97 ( Greece) bronze medal in category congeneric chorus, Legnica Cantat' 2000, singers travelled with tourney in Ukraine, Slovakia, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Yugoslavia, Great Britain, USA and Canada, they had a lot of programmes in TV and radio, recorded 5 long plays and tapes, recently they have recorded CD with Ukrainian Christmas carrots. It is amazing musical output especially when we know that singers live in a several towns in different parts of Poland.
