"Accademic of Amu"
L'Adam Mickiewicz universtity
Academic Choir è stato fondato nel 1966.
JACEK SYKULSKI compositore
University Academic Choir was founded in 1966. The Rector of the University,
Professor Stefan Jurga, is the Honorary President and patron of the choir.
When he was a student he was also a member of the choir and later its
president. In its long history, the AMU Academic Choir has participated
in many prestigious festivals and competitions, in which it was awarded
prizes many times, e.g. in Middlesborough (1st prize in the category of
mixed choirs, 1972) and in Spittal, Austria, 1977.
Since 1996 Jacek Sykulski has been the conductor and musical director of the Academic Choir. Under his conduct the ensemble plays an active role in the cultural life of Poznan and with every concert is more and more esteemed by both the critics and the demanding audience.
Every year the choir participates in the New Years concert, held under the auspices of the Rector, Professor Stefan Jurga. It is also a tradition to participate in the annual International Festival of University Choirs Universitas Cantat, organized by the Adam Mickiewicz University Chamber Choir.
In March 2001 the ensemble sang for the third time during the Meeting of the Academic Choirs of Poznan; the singers performed Sykulskis compositions, especially written for the occasion.
The choir successfully performs together with orchestra; a good example is the Poznan premiere of Igor Stravinskys Requiem Canticles during the Poznan Music Spring 2000 festival.
Under the new conduct the AMU Academic Choir performs more and more often abroad: in Germany, Latvia and Italy. It was a great success for the conductor and the singers to win the first prize in the VIII International Sacred Music Choir Competition Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina in Rome, in the category of mixed choirs. The choir performance was enthusiastically received by the jury, the audience and the competing choirs.
In July 2001 the choir took part in a tour in Canada at Polish Embassys in Ottawa invitation. The concerts in such places like: Toronto, St. Catherines, Brantford, Hamilton, Kitchener, Ottawa, Montreal, Missisaga and Barrys Bay were organized also by General Consulate in Toronto and by Maria Pelegrini a famous all over the world operatic singer. The compositions of Jacek Sykulski like Abba Ojcze or Kyrie aroused admiration and a rapturous applause. The successful concerts bore fruits that the choir was invited to participate in the World Youth Days, which will take place in Canada next year. The trip will be continued in the United States, where the choir is supposed to make a professional tour.
JACEK SYKULSKI Composer and conductor. After graduating from the Poznan Academy of Music and obtaining a degree in composition and clarinet, he went to Canada to study non-traditional voice production techniques (the ability to modulate the voice and the overtones of the sound). He worked with K.G. Mills and The Starscape Singers in Toronto.
He is the composer of the hymn Abba Father composed for the 6th World Youth Day in Czestochowa (Poland). He has composed numerous instrumental pieces and has arranged many choral works. He has twice won the Young Arts prize, which is awarded by Glos Wielkopolski (local daily).
Since 1996 Jacek Sykulski has conducted the Adam Mickiewicz University Academic Choir. Working with the choir proves to be his passion. He claims the human voice to be the first most superb instrument that is able to express more than even the biggest symphony orchestra. He is also the conductor of the vocal ensemble Nova Gaudia, which has given many successful concerts at home and abroad.
