Brief
historical background of Castel di Tora: Founded
in the early medieval period, close to the remains of the ancient Sabine
-Roman city of 'Thiora', Castelvecchio, as it was then known, passed into
the control of the Abbey of Farfa in 1096. Having passed through the hands
of various Roman nobles, the name was changed to Castel di Tora in 1862.
The creation, in the 1930s, of the artificial Lake Turano contributed significantly
to the depopulation of the area and the abandonment of nearby Monte di Tora. |
