| Brief
historical background of Ascrea: The earliest documentary evidence for the existence of a fortified settlement dates from the 14th century. After 1440, when it was ceded by the Baron of Collalto to the Mareri family, it acquired notoriety as a lair of bandits, who exploited the strategic position of the village over the local road system. This situation lasted until 1615, when Ascrea came under the control of the Vatican. Ascrea suffered further disturbances during the Napoleonic wars. |
